He attended Scotch College, University of Melbourne (BEng), Ohio State University (MS), Princeton University (MSE, MA & PhD), and Monash (DipEd) Darvall's career at Monash began in 1970 as Lecturer in Civil Engineering, then Senior Lecturer (1974-84), Reader (1985-88), Dean of Engineering (1988-94), Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1993), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (1993-2002), and Vice-Chancellor and President (2002-2003). He was subsequently awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. Professor Darvall received the Centenary Medal in 2001, and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007.
