In 1963 five departments were formally established - Applied Mechanics, and the departments of Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering. These were reduced to four as of 1 January 1967 when Applied Mechanics became part of the department of Mechanical Engineering. A new department - Materials Engineering - was formally established within the faculty on 1 January 1970. In 1988 Electrical Engineering became the department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering. Following amalgamation with Chisholm Institute of Technology in 1990, the institute's engineering departments were merged into the existing faculty structure and in 1993 the School of Engineering at Gippsland also became part of the faculty. In 1998 the faculty offered the undergraduate BE course at its School of Engineering Science and Medicine at the Sunway Campus in Malaysia.
