He was awarded a MSc from the University of Melbourne, PhD and ScD from Cambridge, and DSc from ANU. Before becoming Vice-Chancellor at Monash, Professor Martin was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry (1962-72) and Dean of Science (1971) at the University of Melbourne; Dean of the Research School of Chemistry (1976-77), Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Advanced Studies, and Emeritus Professor at ANU (1972-77). Professor Martin took up the position of Vice-Chancellor of Monash University in February 1977, a position he retained until the end of January 1987. He then held a Chair of Chemistry from 1987 until he retired in 1991.
Martin also served as the Chair of the Australian Science and Technology Council from 1988-1992 and as a member of the Prime Minister's Science Council from 1989-1992.
Ray Martin died on February 25 2020.
