Biography
Ivan Barko was born in Budapest in 1930. He obtained a "Licence in Philologie romane, avec distinction" from the University of Brussels in 1954 and a "Doctorat de l'Universite de Strasbourg, mention tres honorable, a l'unanimite du jury, avec eloges" from the University of Strasbourg in 1956. He was appointed to a lectureship in French at Newcastle University College 1956-61, and to a Senior Lectureship and subsequent Readership at the University of Melbourne (1962-67) before taking up one of two chairs in French at Monash in 1967. He was also the Chairman of the VUSEB's French Standing Committee. From 1975, till 1991 Professor Barko held the McCaughey Chair in French at the University of Sydney, and in 1993 was appointed Foundation Head of the School of Languages at the University of Melbourne.
