Other languages followed: Indonesian (1963, becoming Indonesian and Malay in 1965); Russian (1964); Linguistics (1965); Spanish (1966); and Japanese (1967). In 1969 each of these became separate departments within the Faculty of Arts. In 1986 the departments of French, Spanish and Italian were combined to form a department of Romance Languages. This department was disbanded in 1999 and the departments of French Studies, Hispanic Studies and Italian Studies all became part of a new School of European Languages and Cultures.
In 2007 French Studies became part of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. Literatures was added in 2014 making - School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics. As at 2021, French Studies is a specialisation in European Languages.
