Its powers and membership are set out in Statute 2.3. The inaugural meeting of the board was held on 16 June 1961. The Dean shares responsibility for the administration of the faculty with the Faculty Board and its committees. The Dean as Chairman of the board, acts as the chief executive officer of the faculty and for all academic decisions , reports and makes recommendations to the Faculty Board. The board makes decisions on all academic matters including subjects and courses; admissions; prerequisites; establishment of chairs; student progress; regulations for degrees; examinations and exclusions. It receives reports from sub-committees and holds elections for the Deanship. The board reports to the Academic Board (previously the Professorial Board).
Faculty boards were constituted under (sections 3-17 of) Statute 2.3 - The Faculties. The requirement for boards to manage the academic affairs of each faculty was excluded from amendments to the Statute as at 20 December 2013.
