Biography
Alan Gregory was born in Melbourne on 9 May 1938. He attended Melbourne High School and later Melbourne University, receiving a BComm in 1959. He attended the University of Bombay, School of Economics from 1960-61, doing postgraduate studies before returning to Melbourne University, where he was awarded a DipEd in 1963 and a BEd in 1967.
From 1961-68 he worked as a teacher for the Victorian Education Department, during which time he taught at Ballarat East High School, 1962-63; Brighton High School, 1964-66; and Elwood High School, 1967-68. From 1965-68 Dr Gregory also worked part-time as a lecturer at Monash University, Faculty of Education, and he became a full-time lecturer there in 1969. He became a Senior Lecturer in 1974 after receiving his MEd from Melbourne University in 1973. From 1974-76 Dr Gregory attended Simon Fraser University in Canada where he was awarded a PhD. Also in 1976 he became Sub Dean of Monash Faculty of Education.
Dr Gregory served as Head of the Curriculum Studies Area, from 1980-81, was Head of the Professional Development Centre, 1988-90, and Head of Social, Administrative and Policy Studies Division 1989-90. He also served on numerous committees within the university. In January 1989 he was made a member of the Order of Australia, for his services to education and the community.
In 1990 Dr Gregory was appointed Master of Ormond College at Melbourne University and he left Monash to take up this appointment at the end of June 1990. His records cover all aspects of a 25 year association with Monash University. Dr Gregory has authored, or co-authored many books and journal articles on economics and has been involved with various research projects, including the Victorian Inquiry into Teacher Education (1978-81), the Ministerial Committee on Religious Education (1974) and several evaluations of programs for the disabled. He has also conducted reviews of schools and curriculum activities, and has served on the councils of a number of schools including Melbourne Girls Grammar. He was Chairman of the Sir Robert Menzies Lecture Trust from 1978. Dr Gregory's other interests include Victorian history and music.
