Series identifierMON1301Series titleRecords related to the Gorman FoundationSeries descriptionThis series consists of papers collected by Dr Alan Gregory during his time as a director of the Eugene Marthe and Pierre Gorman Foundation. The material includes correspondence, financial accounts, brochures and records related to Pierre Gorman's estate. Pierre Patrick Gorman was born deaf, but eventually learnt to speak and could lip-read in French and English. He was the first born-deaf person to graduate from Melbourne University and the first deaf person to graduate with a PhD from Cambridge University. He was a lecturer/senior lecturer, then senior research fellow in Special Education in the Faculty of Education from 1972 until 1982. He had an Airedale terrier 'hearing-ear-dog' called Paul. He received a CBE in 1983 for 'services to the disabled'. Also in 1983, he established the Eugene Marthe & Pierre Gorman Foundation.
