Entity titleUniversity Associate Professor Promotions CommitteeEntity identifier153Entity typeAgencyDate range2007 - 2011DescriptionThe Readership Committee was established as a standing committee of the Professorial Board in December 1961. Membership consisted of three members of the Professorial Board to be augmented by a Dean and other members as required. In December 1964 the new grade of Associate Professorship was established, along with a committee to consider appointments and promotions with the same membership as the Readership Standing Committee. In 1978 membership was expanded to include four professors, two from laboratory departments and two from non laboratory departments, with the Vice-Chancellor or Deputy Vice-Chancellor as Chair. The committee initially met on an ad hoc basis but by 1975 nominations were invited in August each year for promotions to date from the first of January of the following year.
In 1994 new procedures for promotion were introduced with recommendations to the University Readership/Associate Professorship Committee to be forwarded by faculty based Readership/Associate Professorship Advisory Committees. Membership of the university committee consisted of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor together with a Professor appointed by each faculty board, and a member from outside the university "relevant to the discipline". The committee's current terms of reference are: to consider proposals from faculties for the promotion of staff to reader and associate professor and to submit approvals to Academic Board and to Council for noting.
This committee was replaced by Faculty-based Associate Professor Committees in 2011
