Biography
Elizabeth Eggleston was born on 6 November 1934 and was educated at Tintern CEGGS (1945-48) and the University of Melbourne where she obtained a BA (1964) and LLB Hons (1956). She was awarded a LLM (1958) from the University of California at Berkeley. From 1958 to 1960 she worked as a Lecturer at the University of Newcastle before being appointed Senior Lecturer in Law at Monash University. She attended Monash as a full-time student between 1965 and 1968 and was awarded a PhD in 1970 on aborigines and the administration of justice. In 1971 she took over as Director of the Centre for Research into Aboriginal Affairs (established at Monash in 1964, with Colin Tatz as its first Director). Dr Eggleston held this position, at the same time teaching in the Faculty of Law, until her death in March 1976. She is the author of Fear, Favour or Affection (1976)
Papers
Personal papers 1942-1976
The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence and diaries (1948-1976). Also included are notebooks from her years at Tintern Grammar and Melbourne University, photographs and audio tapes. Several items from a small postcard collection date back to the 1920s.
Research files 1945-1977
Files related to PhD research and to Dr Eggleston’s work within both the faculty of Law, and the Centre. Correspondence files, reports, seminar papers and tutorial notes are included along with files related to a period of study leave in Canada and the United States. This collection also includes correspondence, reports and seminar papers accumulated at the Centre prior to the appointment of Dr Eggleston.
