Biography
Bruce Holloway graduated BSc with First Class Honours in Botany from the University of Adelaide in 1948, and was awarded his PhD from California Institute of Technology in 1953. Holloway took up his first academic appointment as Research Fellow in the John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU in 1953. In 1957 he was appointed Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne where he was subsequently promoted to Reader (1961). During his years at Melbourne he held a number of visiting appointments at overseas universities and was awarded the degrees of Master of Science (1962) and Doctor of Science (1963) by the University.
In 1968 Professor Holloway was invited to become the Foundation Professor of Genetics at Monash University, an appointment he held until his retirement in December 1993. From 1969-93 Holloway was Chairman of the Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology and between 1968 and 1971 also acted as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science. Holloway was subsequently made an Honorary Research Fellow of the department. Professor Holloway established and consolidated comprehensive systems of genetic analysis in species of Pseudomonas, in particular P. aeruginosa. Throughout his career Holloway published extensively, addressed major international conferences, and was on the Editorial Board of numerous journals in the biological sciences. In recognition of his distinguished contribution to science he was elected to Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Sciences in 1979 and in 1989 was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia.
