Biography
Peter William Musgrave was born 9 April 1925 in Bradford, Yorkshire. He served as Private and Officer-Cadet in the Royal West Kent Regiment 1943-1944 and as Captain with the 2nd Punjab Regiment saw service in India, China and South West Pacific 1944-1947. In 1949 he received a BA in Economics from St John's College, Cambridge, an MA from the University of Cambridge in 1954 and a Post-graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Cambridge in 1956. He received an Academic Diploma in Education in 1959 from the University of London and in 1964 a PhD in Sociology of Education from the University of London. Before coming to Monash Professor Musgrave had industrial experience in woollen manufacturing in Australasia and North America (1949-1955), taught in secondary and grammar schools in the UK (1955-1961) and lectured at Homerton College, Cambridge (1962-1964), Bede College, University of Durham (1965) and in the Department of Sociology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (1965-1967).
Professor Musgrave was appointed to a Chair of Education and took up the position 1 January 1970. In September 1971 Prof Musgrave took up duties as Pro Vice-Chancellor but resigned this position in October 1971 and returned to the Faculty of Education. In October 1976 Professor Musgrave was appointed Dean, Faculty of Education, and assumed this position in January 1977. In 1981 he relinquished the position as Dean and returned to a Chair of Education. Professor Musgrave took early retirement at the end of 1985. In 1974 Prof Musgrave was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Committee formed to consider teaching of social sciences in secondary schools and to establish contribution which could be made to education of secondary school children by social sciences. Prof. Musgrave became Chairman of state advisory committee in July 1974.
