The role of the committee was to assess justification for inclusion of jobs in the Professional Officer job category; assess grade levels for jobs in this category; assess the suitability of qualifications of proposed Professional Officers for eligibility to be classified as such; and assess grade and salary points to which a particular appointee may be appointed. The Council reported to Council through the Committee of Deans.
In December 1974 Council decided that the functions of the committee should be combined with those of the Technical Staff Committee. Both committees were abolished and a new Professional and Technical Staff Committee established. Membership was specified as that of the previous Technical Staff Committee.
