Professor Faine was Professor of Microbiology at Monash from 1968 until retiring in 1991, when he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. He was Chairman of the Department of Microbiology from 1968-87 and again in 1989. Professor Faine also worked as a consultant to the World Health Organisation and was Chairman of the Bacteriology Section of the International Association of Microbiological Societies (IAMS) between 1974 and 1978, and Chairman of its successor, the Bacteriology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS), from 1978-82.
