It was taught in the 4th, 5th. and 6th years and integrated with clinical teaching. Microbiology was also taught within the Faculty of Science from 1967 onwards. Dr Barrie Patrick Marmion was appointed as the Foundation Professor of Microbiology in1962, and left at the end of 1967. Professor Solomon Faine took up his appointment as Prof of Microbiology and head of the department in early 1968 and was head until 1987 and again in 1989 before retiring in 1991.
Microbiology became part of the School of Biomedical Sciences when it was formed in January 2001. This School became part of the School of Biomedical Science in 2014.
