Biography
Richard Selleck was born on 5 May 1934. He was educated at the University of Melbourne, and his early employment included teaching (1954-57) and a position with the Curriculum and Research Branch of the Victorian Education Department (1958-61). He was appointed to a Lectureship in Education at the University of Melbourne in 1962 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer there in 1968. In 1972 Selleck was appointed to a Chair in Education at Monash where he remained until 1996 (including a period as Head of the School of Graduate Studies in 1994-95).
Since his retirement in 1996 he has been Emeritus Professor at Monash University, and has held a Professorial Fellowship with the Centre for the Study of Higher Education, at the University of Melbourne. Selleck has authored many books and articles related to the history of education both in Australia and Britain, and is the author of biographies of Frank Tate and James Kay-Shuttleworth. He has also served on the editorial boards of various education journals, and on a number of Councils of Victorian tertiary education institutions. Selleck died in October 2022 at the age of 88.
