The initial aim of the courses was to provide academic and professional preparation of primary, secondary, technical teachers and school librarians. In later years, upgrading qualifications and other courses for qualified teachers were also offered, some via Distance Education. Since 1992, the School of Education has offered professional development courses for people involved in educational roles in society (e.g. training personnel and nurse educators). In 1993 the Gippsland School of Education became part of Monash Faculty of Education. Gippsland Campus became part of Federation University in 2014.
