Entity titleDiversity and InclusionEntity identifier286Entity typeAgencyDate rangecirca 2018 - DescriptionThe position of Co-ordinator Equal Opportunity was established in 1987, with the appointment of Dr Margaret James, who initially reported to the Assistant Registrar (Personnel). From 1989-1992, the Equal Opportunity Co-ordinator reported directly to the Registrar. Although the Equal Opportunity Co-ordinator managed an 'Equal Opportunity Office' from the time of her initial employment, this role was not officially recognised until 1991, when her title changed to Equal Opportunity Manager and her office was retitled Equal Opportunity Unit.
The role of Co-ordinating Equal Opportunity was to encompass the needs of both staff and students. However, in 1992, the responsibility for child care within the university was moved to Community Services. During 1992, the Equal Opportunity Unit Manager also started reporting to the Deputy Registrar - Human Resources.
The Equal Opportunity Unit provided executive and secretarial support to a number of university equal opportunity and affirmative action committees. The Unit also ensured that the University was able to meet relevant government and legislative equal opportunity and affirmative action requirements. The Unit developed equal opportunity and affirmative action policies, schemes and programs and assisted other groups and departments within the University community in implementing those policies and activities. During 2000, the office was restructured and retitled Equal Opportunity and Employment Equity. In 2018 the name Social Justice Unit does not appear on the Monash website - seems to have been replaced by Diversity and Inclusion.
