Biography
Professor Neustupny was appointed to the foundation Chair of Japanese in 1966 and held this position until he retired in 1993. Dr. Neustupny's previous position was Research Associate of the Oriental Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague. In 1952 he entered the Philological Faculty of Charles University, Prague, specialising in Japanese and History of the Far East, and in 1957 received the degree of "promovany Milolog, which may be regarded as the equivalent of an M.A. In 1960 he completed a postgraduate course at the Oriental Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, where he specialized in Japanese linguistics. Dr. Neustupny spent the following two years in the Faculty of Letters in the University of Tokyo under a scholarship programme of the Japanese government. In 1963 after returning to the Oriental Institute he was awarded the degree of "Kandidat Filologickych ved" (C.Sc. Which is equivalent to a Ph.D.) by the Institute. Professor Neustupny was made an Emeritus Professor in 1994.
