The first student intake was in 1967. In 1998 the department became part of the School of Asian Languages and Studies and in 2002 was incorporated into a new School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. Professor Neustupny retired in 1993. Subsequent Heads of the department have included Professors Ross Mouer and Helen Marriott.
