The College of Pharmacy was established in 1881 as the School of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria. The first classes at the School were established under an apprenticeship system leading to a registration examination conducted by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. Regulations under the Medical Act 1915 formalised a four year apprenticeship with a compulsory syllabus and a study requirement for registration. In 1960 the School moved from 360 Swanston Street to new premises in Parkville. The same year, the Pharmacy Board approved a full-time three year course in pharmacy and abandoned the apprenticeship system of training. In 1966 the school affiliated with the Victoria Institute of Colleges and by agreement with Federal and State governments received first appreciable government funding in 1967. The College was given permission to award the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1967, and the Master of Pharmacy degree in 1970. The College became an independent organisation in 1967 operating by limited guarantee under the Companies Act. From its establishment in 1881 to the end of 1976, the College was owned and operated by the Pharmaceutical Society. In 1977 the college became an independent organisation governed by a Council separate from the Council of the Society. Pharmaceutical Society Councillors have remained members of the College Company, and the Society and College continue to work closely together. Through the repeal of the VIC Act in 1980, the College became responsible to the Victorian Post Secondary Education Commission, and was declared for the purposes of accrediting its own courses in January 1984. In 1986 the College was recognised as the Department of Pharmaceutical Science of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of conduction PhD programs, and in 1988 signed an affiliation agreement with a view to forming a closer association with that university. In 1990 these negotiations were terminated and an affiliation agreement entered into with Monash University. The College became a faculty of Monash in 1993; and was renamed the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in August 2008.
