Wallace took up his appointment as the founding chair. In 1969 undergraduate courses were offered in the field of automatic information processing and computing to be taken as part of a Bachelor of Science degree. A graduate diploma in Computer Science became available in 1976. Following the merger with Chisholm Institute in 1990 the department was incorporated into a new faculty of Computing and Information Technology.
Professor Wallace headed the department until 1987 when Professor Leslie Goldschlager was appointed to a second chair and took over the position. On 1 October 1994, Professor John Crossley became the third and final head of department, and held that position until the 31 December 1997.
In 1998 the department became part of the newly formed School of Computer Science and Software Engineering CSSE which also encompassed the Caulfield departments of Computer Technology, Digital Systems, and Software Development. David Abramson was the first head until 2002, followed by Bala Srinivasan in 2003-2004. In 2005 Joint Acting Head were Christine Mingins at Clayton and Graham Farr at Caulfield.
In 2005, a campus-based school structure was established with: Berwick School of Information Technology, Caulfield School of Information Technology, Clayton School of Information Technology, Gippsland School of Information Technology and Peninsula School of Information Technology.
