Biography
Mary Lord was born in Tasmania on 2 March 1929. She graduated from Monash with a Masters degree in English in 1977 after studying in the Department of English, and working as a tutor there since 1968. She was appointed Lecturer in 1974, and continued in that position until 1980. She was instrumental in establishing the Association for the Study of Australian Literature in 1978; and she was a regular contributor to the Australian Book Review, and became its NSW editor in 1979. Mary Lord later served as director of the National Book Council (1984- ); drama reviewer for The Australian for several years; and a columnist for The Melbourne Weekly. In 1991 she edited The Penguin Best Australian Short Stories.
