He completed his MB BS at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand in 1947 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1954. In 1955 he was awarded a Nuffield Dominions Demonstratorship in the Department of Human Anatomy at Oxford University, UK, where he obtained his PhD in 1957. In 1961 he was appointed Foundation Professor of Anatomy at Monash and was also Chairman of the Department of Anatomy. In 1977 he became Dean of Medicine, a position he held until 1988.
Prior to working at Monash he was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor of Anatomy at Otago University and during 1953 was a clinical surgeon in Auckland, NZ. Schofield was a prime mover in establishing and developing the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (1980 and 1985).
Professor Schofield was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1981. He retired from Monash in December 1989, and was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. He died on 12 March 2010.
