He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (1951), Diploma of Teaching (1952) and PhD(1965) from the University of Sydney. He was a high school teacher (1953-56) and lectured at Sydney Teachers' College (1957-58) and the University of Sydney (1959-68) He was a visiting lecturer (1966) and Associate Professor of Geography & Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin (1968-69) He was the Rockefeller Foundation Visiting Professor of Geography at University of Ibadan, Nigeria (1970-71) He took up the appointment to the second Chair of Geography at Monash in 1971. He was a visiting professor at the London School of Economics (1973) and at Nanyang University (1979-80).He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1977-79), Pro Vice-Chancellor (1982-85), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (1986), Vice-Chancellor (1987-96)
He was elected to the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (1973). He was appointed to the Board of the Docklands Authority (1991) and as Director of the Open Learning Agency of Australia (1993). Professor Logan was appointed Emeritus Professor in 1997.
Logan died in September 2022 at the age of 91.
