He was educated at Melbourne Grammar School; Trinity College, Melbourne University (MD BS); and University of London (PhD). Larkins' early career was in diabetes and endocrinology. He was the James Stewart chair of Medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1984-1997, then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne from 1998 to 2003. He became Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash in 2003 and remained until 2009. He was then appointed Emeritus Professor.
Awards: Eric Susman Prize for Medical Research in 1982; Sir William Upjohn Medal for distinguished services to medicine 2002; Centenary of Federation Medal in 2002; Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to medicine and health in 2002. Is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
