Internal Auditor was Alan Blake from 1966 to 1984, then Robert Cochrane 1985 - 1990, Gordon Bryant 1991 - 1995, then Ronald (Greg) Connell 1996 - 1997.
It then became part of Audit and Risk Management (1998 - 2011), with Director Ronald (Greg) Connell. In 2008 Lee Ward became Director and upon her departure at the end of 2010, there was a restructure and Audit and Risk Management split into Internal Audit and Risk and Compliance, with Peter Dwyer as Director, Internal Audit from September 2011. (Greg Connell stepped in as Acting Director between Lee Ward's departure and Peter Dwyer's arrival). Craig Stagoll replaced Peter Dwyer as Director in April 2018.
Internal Audit has independent status within the University. It reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor and the Director, Internal Audit holds office on the authority of the chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of Council. The Internal Audit Charter establishes the authority and responsibilities conferred by the Council on Internal Audit and the university's co-sourced provider of internal audit services.
Internal Audit develops an annual Audit Program setting out the intended nature of internal audits for the coming year and is approved by the Audit and Risk Committee in November of each year. The scope of the program includes the total activities and operations of all academic and administrative departments and organisational and functional units and centres of Monash University, including off-shore operations and auxiliary operations. The program is developed in consultation and with feedback from the Audit and Risk Committee; the University's executive and senior management; University strategic, functional and operational plans; the University's risk framework and strategic and operational risks where documented; external auditors; past internal audit work and knowledge of emerging trends.
