Biography
Jeffrey Bruce Jacobs was born on 19 September 1943 in the USA. He graduated from Columbia University with an AB (1965), MA (1970) and PhD (1975). He attended National Taiwan University (1965-66). He was Assistant Professor of Political Science & Asian Studies at Clarkson College of Technology in New York (1975), Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at Hofstra University in New York (1975-6). At La Trobe University he was lecturer in Politics (1976-78), senior lecturer (1979-80), Chair of Asian Studies (1984-86,1988), and Foundation Director, Institute of Asian Studies (1989-90). He was appointed as Associate Professor in the Monash Department of Asian Languages and Studies in 1991, and to the Chair of the Department in 1998. He retired in 2013 and was appointed Emeritus Professor.
Prof Jacobs' professional associations included the Melbourne China Studies Group, Victorian Government China Advisory Committee, The Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs, Asia-Australia Institute (UNSW), and the Australia-China Council.
Bruce Jacobs died on 24 November 2019.
