The school initially incorporated Politics, Anthropology, Sociology, and the National Centre for Australian Studies. In 2000, the Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research also joined the school. In 2001, Criminal Justice & Criminology, and Social Work were added, and in 2002 the Centre for Population and Urban Research. Communications and Behavioural Studies became part of the school in 2004, with the Centre for Research on Work and Society in the Global Era joining in 2005. More research centres continued to be added.
In 2014 the school became the School of Social Sciences (SoSS) incorporating Anthropology, Behavioural Studies, Criminology, Politics, and Sociology, as well as Women's and Gender Studies. In 2015 politics within SoSS expanded to incorporate International Relations, and Human Geography was added to the school in 2016.
As at July 2022, the School of Social Sciences includes Anthropology, Criminology, Human Geography, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies, and Behavioural Studies.
