The founding professor of Politics was Solomon Rufus Davis, appointed 1 January 1962. Prior to this he was senior lecturer in the Department of Politics.
Politics was transferred to the Faculty of Arts in 1990. In 2000 the department became part of the School of Political and Social Inquiry. This school was renamed the School of Social Sciences in 2014.
