Although the committee only met twice there was considerable discussion between interested parties prior to its formation. Professor Nairn was one of the chief instigators of the committee and much of the correspondence and draft papers were produced by him. He also gathered together all the relevant information from overseas. On his retirement Professor Nairn transferred the volume to the archives as Monash's Department of Pathology and Immunology had played a major role in establishing Clinical Immunology as a separate discipline. The documents were especially bound in a volume with a blue cover and the title and dates on the spine. Series History By the early 1970s the role of immunology in the treatment of diseases had received world wide recognition, with clinical immunology accepted as a part of internal medicine and clinical pathology in medically advanced countries. The Australian Society for Immunology recognised these developments and made representations to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia. This resulted in the formation of the Joint Working Committee, consisting of Professor R. C. Nairn (chairman), Dr I. R. Mackay, Dr D.S. Nelson, Associate Professor R. Penny and Dr J. Sands. The committee met only twice, in 1973, after which it submitted its report to the three bodies concerned.
