Entity titleBoard of the Koorie Research CentreEntity identifier7Entity typeAgencyDate range1989 - 1999DescriptionThe Centre for Research into Aboriginal Affairs was originally constituted by Council, in December 1964 to act as an interdisciplinary body to coordinate research in the field. A Professorial Sub-Committee for the Centre was also established in 1964 which invited both Monash and non-Monash persons, with an interest in aboriginal affairs, to join a board for the centre. The members of the new board met for the first time in October 1965 and its role was to provide the director of the centre with advice and assistance, to facilitate the development of inter-faculty and interdisciplinary programmes and to provide the centre with access to university organs of government.
In 1988 following a review of all standing committees of the Professorial Board, the board's terms of reference were expanded to include advice on fund raising, assistance with promotion of the centre's activities and facilitation of new activities; and provisions of a forum for liaison and the exchange of information between the university, the centre and Koori and other members of the public. The board's membership was also reduced and the Director of Monash Orientation Scheme for Aborigines was included. In 1989 the centre became the Koorie Research Centre and in 1992 the centre became a centre of the Faculty of Arts.
In December 1999 Council approved the disestablishment of the Koori Research Centre, the Centre for Koorie Studies at Gippsland and the Monash Orientation Scheme for Aborigines, and the establishment in their place of the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies. The Centre has since been renamed the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre.
