It succeeded the Board’s Television Committee and was to advise the Board on all matters related to television and audio-visual aids including, in the first instance, the use of existing facilities, the best method of improving and expanding those facilities, and the base requirements for a building to house the audio-visual facilities. Over the next few years the committee’s role became largely a management one, dealing with budgeting, equipment purchase, staffing and maintenance, and the general operation of the Audio Visual Aids Section. In 1972 a sub-committee was established to review the operations of the Audio Visual Aids Section and to examine possible future roles for the Section. The sub-committee reported in March 1973 recommending the incorporation of the T.V. and A.V.A. Section into the Higher Education Research Unit which was itself undergoing review. The Professorial Board subsequently set up an ad hoc committee to advise on how the recommendation might be implemented. In early 1974 the two services were amalgamated into a combined unit i.e.. Higher Education Advisory and Research Unit, which was to be concerned with research into and dissemination of educational methods at Monash. In March 1974 the Standing Committee on Television and Other Audio Visual Aids, the Standing Committee on Education (previously responsible for HERU)and the ad hoc Committee on the Future of the Television and Other Audio Visual Aids Section were all dissolved and a new Standing Committee on HEARU established.
