Entity titleStanding Committee on HEARUEntity identifier23Entity typeAgencyDate range1974 - 1988DescriptionThe Standing Committee on the Higher Education Advisory and Research Unit was established by the Professorial Board in March 1974. This followed the creation of HEARU by the amalgamation of two earlier bodies, the Higher Education Research Unit and the Television and Other Audio Visual Aids Section. The committee’s terms of reference were to plan, and make recommendations on, the policy and development of the Unit; to assist the Director of HEARU in policy and other matters; to assess the financial needs of HEARU; to encourage close cooperation between HEARU and other units such as the Library and other departments of the University; and to advise the Professorial Board on matters of University education policy.
In 1979/80 an ad hoc committee was appointed by the Professorial Board to review HEARU and its operations. Both the unit and the Standing Committee were retained although the HEARU Liaison Committee was dissolved at this time. In March 1987 the Educational Technology Section was separated from HEARU. The Standing Committee became for a brief time the Standing Committee on HEARU and ETS, until ETS was transferred to the Registrar’s Department in early 1988.
The Standing Committee was abolished in September 1988, after a review of all standing committees of the Professorial Board concluded that HEARU was essentially an arm of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, and that its terms of reference should be to advise the Vice-Chancellor, and other bodies within the university, on relevant matters. The Director of HEARU reports annually to the Academic Board.
