Entity titleStanding Committee for the Centre of Migrant and Intercultural StudiesEntity identifier33Entity typeAgencyDate range1984 - 1988DescriptionIn 1974 an Arts Faculty ad hoc Committee on Immigrant Studies was formed to examine a proposal to establish a Board of Immigrant Studies. At its second meeting, which included representatives of the Education Faculty, it was decided to form the Coordinating Committee for Migrant Studies and this inter-faculty committee held its first meeting on 26 August 1974. The Coordinating Committee’s terms of reference were: to publicise relevant existing Arts and Education units to allow students in the field to coordinate their studies; to provide machinery for joint supervision of postgraduate research in the field; and to publicise the research and teaching in migrant studies which was conducted within the University. The committee was made up of three to five representatives from each of the faculties of Arts and Education with the power to co-opt other members, Deans as ex officio members, and a chairman elected every two years from alternating faculties. The committee reported to both the Arts and Education Faculty Boards.
In 1976 a Centre for Migrant and Intercultural Studies was established as a more effective way of attracting recognition and financial support from outside sources. The new committee for the Centre for Migrant Studies was structured in the same way as the coordinating committee had been. It was responsible to the Faculty of Arts but continued to report to the Faculty of Education.
The functions of the Centre were: to publicise relevant Arts and Education units; to administer a new Graduate Diploma in Migrant Studies; to provide machinery for joint supervision of postgraduate research; to organise interdepartmental seminars; to conduct conferences and encourage research projects; and to attract funds for relevant research. The Centre has also been involved in publication of the journals Ethnic Studies and Journal of Intercultural Studies. The Centre’s name was changed to the Centre for Migrant and Intercultural Studies in 1984 and the committee of the Centre became a Standing Committee of the Professorial Board with a revised constitution and a membership defined in terms of participating departments. Four years later, following a review of its standing committees, the Professorial Board recommended that the committee again report through the Arts Faculty Board.
