Biography
Edward Stuart Reginald Hughes, was born at Bruthen, Victoria on 4 July 1919. He was educated at St Paul's Preparatory School (Malvern), Melbourne Grammar School and University of Melbourne, where he received a MB and BS (1943), MD (1945) and MS (1946). He received a CBE in 1971 and was knighted in 1977. In 1984 he was awarded an honorary LLD from Monash. Sir Edward had a long and remarkable career in surgery with a world-wide reputation. He was President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for two terms and was instrumental in creating the Road Trauma Committee of the College and in developing its strategy on seat belts and alcohol legislation. He was Professor of Surgery, Alfred Hospital, Faculty of Medicine from 1973 to 1984, then Emeritus Professor of Surgery.
Professor Hughes died on 16 October 1998.
