In 1965 Mr D. R. Ellis was appointed Deputy Warden and Sports Administrator, a position he continued in, variously retitled, until retiring at the end of 1992. He was succeeded as Director of the Association by Mr John Campbell.
Formerly part of the University Union, the Association was established under its own University Statute (2.11) in 1985, which stated that its objects should be: to encourage, foster, promote, develop, extend and govern amateur sport for its members. These were later extended to include provision of facilities for members, and for commercial use and hire. The association's colours were saxe blue and white. The SRA Council was elected at the annual general meeting of the association and consisted of the Patron, President, two Vice-Presidents, and the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer; together with the Secretaries of each club enrolled with the association. An Executive Committee was appointed annually by Council to deal with matters of urgency and matters referred to it by the Council. The constitution of the Sports and Recreation Association was rescinded on 13/4/2001
Since 2002, sporting facilities and services across Monash campuses has come under the auspices of Monyx Pty Ltd, a company jointly owned by Monash University and participating Student Associations.
