Prior to this, recommendations for promotions were made by Faculty Promotions Committees to the Committee of Deans. Committee of Deans recommendations were then submitted to Council. The new committee was established as a standing committee of the Professorial Board to consider applications and make recommendations to Council on promotions to Senior Lectureships. The committee was composed of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and seven other members, one from each faculty appointed from professorial (appointed) and non-professorial (elected) staff of the rank of senior lecturer or above. Following the Academic Award Restructuring Agreement in 1991 new merit based promotion procedures were introduced. Promotions up to senior lectureship level were devolved to faculty Academic Promotions Committees.
