The inaugural meeting of the group took place in the Main Library on 7th December 1966. The Friends association was fully constituted in 1968 and it exists for the "sole benefit of the Library". The aim of the association is to assist the Library through tax-deductible cash donations and gifts of books, manuscripts and other materials. The Friends association supports the Library in the 'form of a least one major purchase a year'. Notable purchases so far include additions to the Library's special collections including the Fanfrolico Press Collection and the Swift Collection. The association holds approximately three meetings a year. A guest speaker is normally invited to address the meeting. An annual general meeting is also held. The association appears to have been wound up in 2013 (ref CD13/373).
