Entity titleCRC for Southern Hemisphere MeteorologyEntity identifier265Entity typeAgencyDate range1993 - 2000DescriptionThe CRC SHM was established in July 1993 under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centre Program as a cooperative venture between: Monash University; Bureau of Meteorology; CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research and Cray Research P/L. The centre effectively started operations in September 1993. The governing body of the centre was the Board of Management comprising an independent Chairman (Professor John Swan), representatives of the core parties, two independent members and the Director of the Centre. The Centre's research and education programs were managed by the Executive Committee which consisted of the Director and Deputy Director, Program Leaders and representatives of the CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Physics and Cray Research. An Education Committee was also established to advise on education policy, scholarships, courses and student selection. Professor David Karoly served as Acting Director of the Centre 1993-94 and Director 1995-2000. Professor Graeme Stevens served as Director for 12 months in 1994-95
The Meteorology CRC was one of the principal centres in Australia for research and graduate training in the meteorological sciences. It had five main programs, three in research, one in education and one in technology transfer and communication. More than 50 scientists were involved in the Centre's three research programs: Ozone, Global Transport Modelling and Southern Hemisphere Climate Dynamics. The centre closed at the end of June 2000 after funding was not renewed.
