The foundation Professor of Librarianship Professor Jean Whyte was appointed head of the School. The school's first MA (Librarianship) students were enrolled in 1976.
In April 1990, the name of the school was changed to Graduate Department of Librarianship, Archives and Records on the recommendation of the Arts Faculty Board. In the same year the department moved from the Faculty of Arts into the newly formed Faculty of Professional Studies. A small number of students were enrolled in the M.A (Archives and Records) course in 1989, while the Diploma of Archives and Records Management course accepted its first students in 1990. The aim of the department was to "improve the understanding of the purpose and problems of libraries and recordkeeping and other information agencies through study and research".
During 1993, the Faculty of Professional Studies was disbanded and the department was moved to the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology; and in 1997 the department was renamed School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS). In 2005 the Faculty of Information Technology was restructured and campus specific schools of IT were created for each campus. SIMS became part of the Caulfield School of Information Technology.
