Entity titleGippsland School of Media & Social ScienceEntity identifier373Entity typeAgencyDate range2011 - 2013DescriptionOriginally part of Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education's School of Business and General Studies (1971-73), the school was renamed School of Business and Social Sciences in 1974 and became the School of Social Sciences in 1981. The School continued as part of Monash University College Gippsland, but the school's name was changed to include Humanities at the time of full integration of MUCG with Monash University.
During 1998, a decision was made to add 'Communications' to the School name, and this decision was ratified at the first school board meeting in 1999. The School operates under the umbrella of the Faculty of Arts and reports to the faculty board, but maintains autonomy over courses and student matters. The school includes seven sections: communications and writing, cognitive science and behavioural studies, journalism, history-politics, Indonesian, sociology and social research, and social welfare. The School also includes two centres - the Centre for Gippsland Studies and the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies.
Gippsland Campus became part of Federation University in 2014.
