Biography
Nicolas Morcovescu was born on 29 January 1922 in Bucharest Romania. He obtained Science and Arts degrees from the National College Bucharest in 1940 and 1941, and began graduate studies in Chemical Engineering before taking political asylum in Paris in 1948. In 1958 Morcovescu took up a teaching appointment at the University of Pennsylvania while working towards a PhD in Romance Languages. He was awarded an MA in 1961, and PhD in 1963. His work prior to the appointment at Monash was chiefly related to a University of Pennsylvania project 'The Study of Romance Languages and their Structures using an Electronic Computer'. At Monash, Dr Morcovescu was employed as Senior Lecturer in French from 1965 until 1987. He chaired the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of French Studies until the end of 1991, and continued an active interest in various aspects of literary and linguistic research.

Writings, memorabilia and correspondence 1958-1996
Includes typescripts of essays submitted as part of a course of study at the University of Pennsylvania between 1960 and 1963; a copy of Dr Morcovescu's final dissertation in Romance Languages; and a collection of working papers related to literary research carried out while at Monash University. Also included is a small collection of photographs of Dr Morcovescu working with one of the first Univac computers in 1961. Includes papers by academics, Department of Modern Languages correspondence, and personal correspondence.
