The 'Coat of Arms' of the University is described as follows: 'Azure a Chevron Argent between in chief an open book proper bound clasped and edged Or and a Sword environed by a Laurel Wreath Gold and in base a representation of the constellation of the Southern Cross also Argent'.
The devices on the shield arise as follows: the open book is commonly found on the shields of universities and learned societies and symbolises the pursuit of knowledge, the stars of the Southern Cross are of course appropriate of our geographical position, wreath and sword are a quotation from the shield of Sir John Monash.
The motto 'Ancora Imparo' is said to have been a saying of Michelangelo and means 'I am still learning'. [see also 1984/66 item 9 - Draft copies of Monash armorial bearings]. Two photographs of the Coat and Warrant of Arms were forwarded to the university the Executor of the will of Mr Norman Perry, first Secretary to the University Council.
