In 1980 the Legal Office was transferred to the Registrar’s department where it remained until 1987 when the Office again became responsible to the Comptroller. It was renamed the Solicitor’s Office in the same year. Since the administrative review of 1993 the University Solicitor has reported directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
The work of the Solicitor’s Office covers the legal implications of all aspects of University administration including statutes and regulations, research contracts, patents, Freedom of Information appeals, the University Discipline Committee, purchases and sales of real estate and other contractual matters.
The Solicitor's Office was renamed the Office of the General Counsel in September 2014.
