Clerical staff promotions were considered by a small committee of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and one of the Deans. From 1965 the committee consisted of two nominees of the Comptroller. In 1969 a review of procedures was carried out by the Professorial Board. The committee subsequently became responsible for clerical staff promotions and for levels of newly established clerical and clerical support positions. Its membership was changed to include one nominee of the Professorial Board and two nominees of the Comptroller i.e.. a senior member of Staff Branch and a senior member of the administrative staff.
In 1983 the committee was restructured to include a Classification and Grading Sub-Committee and an Appeals Sub-Committee. Composition of the full committee became: the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, a Dean nominated by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Comptroller, a professor nominated by the Professorial Board, a nominee of the Comptroller and a nominee of the Registrar. The full committee subsequently met at the discretion of its Chairman to deal with matters other than the classification and grading of individual members of staff.
